Arjun Deshpande, a 17-year-old entrepreneur from Mumbai, has become the youngest Indian to receive the prestigious "Aadhaar Award" from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The award was presented to Deshpande by Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, at a ceremony held in New Delhi on Monday.
Deshpande, who is the founder and CEO of Generic Aadhaar, was recognized for his innovative business model that aims to provide affordable generic medicines to the masses. The company sources medicines directly from manufacturers and sells them at a lower price, making healthcare more accessible to the underprivileged.
Speaking at the event, Ratan Tata praised Deshpande for his vision and determination to make a positive impact in the healthcare sector. He also encouraged other young entrepreneurs to follow in Deshpande's footsteps and use their skills and resources to create a better society.
Deshpande, who started Generic Aadhaar at the age of 16, said that he was inspired by the government's push for affordable healthcare and the potential of Aadhaar to streamline the distribution of medicines. He also thanked his team and mentors for their support and guidance.
The Aadhaar Award, instituted by UIDAI, recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding contribution towards the Aadhaar ecosystem. Deshpande is the first individual to receive the award, which was previously given to organizations such as the National Payments Corporation of India and the Unique Identification Authority of India.
Deshpande's achievement has been widely praised by the business community and government officials. Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder of Infosys and the architect of Aadhaar, congratulated Deshpande on Twitter and called him a "role model for young entrepreneurs."
